2016 Princeton Internships in Civic Service Application

Application Requirements

APPLICATION DEADLINE: WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2015 BY 5PM EST

This application form is to be used for the following internship program:
PICS (Princeton Internships in Civic Service)

1. Please go to the PICS website to learn more about the details and requirements of the program and to read the specific internship descriptions. PICS applicatons are processed on a rolling basis.  Even when applying to more than one internship, it is possible that you will receive an offer for an internship from the PICS office before you hear or interview for another intenrship opportunity.  Regardless of this, the offer is valid for 3 days only.  Please carefully review your choices for both interest and location to make sure your choice is appropriate for you.  Please consult the housing guidelines and other information available to you before submitting your application.  Offers are made to participants in good faith by AND an acceptance by the student is relied upon by the community partner organiation and PICS. Reneging on your acceptance at a later date is detrimental to all and is a poor reflection on all parties.

2. Each student is eligible to apply to TWO (2) PICS internship organizations. However, you must submit a separate cover letter for each internship for which you apply. Since several PICS organizations have multiple internships and you will be able to apply to every internship position for any such organization using a single PICS selection, you will be required to write separate cover letters for each internship position to which you are applying. This information is also clearly described within the relevant internship position descriptions.

3. Most PICS opportunities are open to all enrolled Princeton students; exceptions are noted on each internship description. Graduating seniors are not eligible to apply.

4. If you close the application before clicking SUBMIT at the bottom of the page, your entries will not be saved. Please be prepared to complete the application, including uploading your cover letters and resume. We recommend reading through the entire application so that you can record and prepare all the required documents in advance.

5. After you've clicked SUBMIT at the bottom of the application to submit your application, you will receive an email confirmation that we have received it.

Please direct any questions to Evan Schneider (609-258-7443), or set an appoint using WASS.

Applicants must be enrolled at Princeton during the spring semester in order to be eligible for an internship.  If you are not enrolled, we will not be able to accept your application.

If you are studying abroad, you are technically still enrolled at Princeton during that study experience. You should answer the above question with "yes," and therefore this restriction does not apply to you.
Information from other offices at Princeton, e.g. residential colleges, Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Students, or others, may be requested as part of the application review process to ensure that all students can have a safe and productive experience. Decisions on individual applications are made on a case by case basis.

Instructions for Cover Letters and Selecting Organizations

PICS Internship Selection Instructions:

Please select the PICS organizations to which you are applying. You may apply to up to two PICS organizations. PICS internships are not open to graduating seniors.

If the PICS organization which you selected has multiple internships, you will be asked to select the opportunities you would like to apply to. Please note: Each organization will see these selections and you are required to write a separate cover letter for each internship that you select.
Cover Letter Instructions:

For each internship to which you are applying, write a cover letter (a maximum of 500 words) addressing the points indicated below. Each cover letter should be unique to the placement; generic letters are not as appealing to the sponsor organizations. Be sure to introduce your background and demonstrate your interest in the position and organization. Here are some guiding questions you should answer to help you write an effective, focused PICS cover letter:

1) Why do you want to spend the summer in a public service organization?
2) Why do you want to work in this particular area and with this organization? Explain your understanding of the issues that this organization addresses.
3) How have your academic studies, work and personal experiences prepared you for this organization?

Before submitting cover letters, please carefully read each internship description to which you are applying as some special instructions may be indicated for this step. For a general cover letter template, see the Career Services website. Please do not follow up with the organization to which you are applying. You should not contact the organization unless they contact you first. Also, though career services suggests that you make your letter out to the hiring manager. However, since you don't have this information it is best to use the phrase "To Whom It May Concern" instead.

You must name your cover letter as follows: LastName_FirstName_Letter1.pdf (for PICS Organization 1) and LastName_FirstName_Letter2.pdf (for PICS Organization 2). For example:

Schneider_Evan_Letter1.pdf

Do not label it "PICS" or "Pace" or "Cover Letter". Please make sure that your cover letter is saved as a PDF before you upload it.

Please note: If you are applying for multiple internship positions within a single PICS organization selection, be sure to submit all cover letters for that organization in ONE document, with clearly marked sections for each different internship placement to which you are applying within that organization.

Please make sure that your cover letter is saved as a PDF.

Select the PICS organizations to which you are applying.

We recognize that narrowing down to two organizations can present difficulties for students. It also sometimes creates situations in which some organizations receive many applications and other organizations receive relatively few applicants. In these cases we sometimes find ourselves in the situation of matching students to organizations they did not apply to.
Which area of interest should we consider you for? Check all that apply. *
