The most important factor in student achievement is the teacher in the classroom; therefore, curriculum and pedagogy are only as good as the person teaching it. Teaching is undoubtedly one of the most difficult professions that causes physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion.  Teachers may question whether education is the right profession for them.  I Survived…Teacher Self-care takes teachers through the six phases every teacher goes through (anticipation, survival, disillusionment, rejuvenation, reflection, and second anticipation). Teachers will reflect, network, and apply the skills, strategies, and knowledge to move away from survival and toward becoming a flourishing educator.

Children who have experienced significant trauma throughout their lives do not respond to “business as usual” behavioral techniques.  Challenging behavior can be a contributing variable to teacher and student stress as well as teacher burnout.  Children with trauma can respond to behavioral interventions; however, the efficacy of these interventions is completely dependent on relational variables.  Participants will leave this class with an overview or neuropsychology as it pertains to trauma, developmental implications of trauma, reframing of intervention-resistant behavior, interventions for addressing social and emotional deficits from an experiential vantage point (plus much more)!
