Leaders Inspiring Readers Award

This award from the International Literacy Association (ILA) is presented to a researcher or practitioner who has contributed significantly to advancing the knowledge base and instructional efficacy of educators in the focus area of struggling readers.

  • Applicants are notified of the results via email by the end of June 2021


  • Nominees must have current ILA membership.
  • Nominees must be leaders of research and practice in the field of struggling reading who serve the profession and assume leadership positions in several important capacities in struggling reading education (e.g., researcher, teacher, scholar, supervisor, author, lecturer, administrator, counselor).
  • Nominees must be distinguished, innovative, and long-standing contributors to the field through methods and/or media; design and implementation of effectual reading courses; or outstanding lectures for professionals specializing in struggling readers.
  • Nominees must be role models/mentors who instruct students/teachers to their full potential and support their ability to effectively guide struggling readers and who inspire students, teachers, and colleagues through research, lectures, writings, and instruction.
  • Nominees must be disseminators who research, publish, and promote beyond their own campus effective practices for teaching struggling readers.
  • Nominees must be instrumental in the initiation and development of original ideas that have increased knowledge and understanding of the reading process and/or improved practices in struggling reading instruction and development.
  • Applicants must be influential in the production of definitive material or important restructuring of existing material with exhaustive coverage in the field of struggling readers.
