The Montgomery County Planning Department seeks to recognize exceptional architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design that represents Montgomery County’s high quality of design to the region, state, and nation. In 2017, the Department will hold its third annual Design Excellence Award competition to honor this work.
In past years, the top award recognized an exceptional building and site representing design excellence that enhances the public realm. This year, a second top award will be given to honor a project that exemplifies design excellence of a public space. These spaces can include parks, plazas, and/or streetscapes that are vibrant and enrich the surrounding community and can be either privately or publicly owned.
The two winning projects should express the essential qualities of outstanding walkable, sustainable places at the scale of the neighborhood, block and/or building. They both will illustrate how great design contributes to the community in terms of character, identity, and economic value. They will be projects deserving of community pride. These awards provide the opportunity for the winning projects to be seen widely, particularly in business and professional settings where the best qualities of Montgomery County are promoted.
Entries will be accepted starting Monday, May 15, 2017. The deadline for submission is Thursday, July 27th, 2017. The selection of the two winners, one for buildings and sites, and one for public spaces, will be made by an outside jury with expertise in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, planning and urban design selected by the Planning Department
The two winners will be announced on Thursday, October 19 at an awards celebration at the Silver Spring Civic Building, 1 Veterans Place, Silver Spring, MD 20910. This event will be part of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Potomac Valley Chapter annual awards celebration.
