LIFT AS YOU CLIMB: Fall Volunteer Kickoff Registration

The Pace Center for Civic Engagement is proud to host Lift As You Climb, a conference on volunteering.  Bringing together students, community partners and staff, this conference aims to create a space for meaningful dialogue while preparing volunteers to do service well.   

The Volunteering Kickoff will take place on Saturday, September 28 from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. in the Frist Campus Center.  Registration is required and will open on September 9. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Entering the Carceral State -Teaching on “the inside” presents a unique set of challenges and rewards.  The session will feature representatives from the State of New Jersey’s Department of Corrections.  You will learn more about the goals and context of working with incarcerated persons.
 
Princeton Beyond the Gates - How much do you really know about the town of Princeton? Our local area has a rich and diverse culture and history that is sometimes forgotten and overlooked. This session with esteemed local historian Shirley Satterfield will dig deep into the communities of the Witherspoon-Jackson neighborhood, Princeton’s past, and how it’s heritage and stories shape the present.

Networking Opportunity: Time with Pace Staff
 
Trenton History and Context - Learn about the forces that come together in our Capital City to create change.  Come learn from Trenton City Council Member and community activist, Jerell Blakely not only how the political structures work but how the community organized efforts come together to benefit the citizens and families of this often misunderstood place.
 
Wellness - Being a student, a friend, a volunteer, and more can be a lot to handle for all of us. How can we avoid the burnout that leaves us sick and tired? In this session, workshop participants will learn how to create personal and communal wellness plans, identify campus and local resources, and find rest in community.

Networking Opportunity: Youth Advocacy/Youth Development
 
Alumni Panel - One of the amazing things about service is that there is a multitude of ways to incorporate it into your life and career post Princton.  Come to this panel to hear the stories of Princeton University Alumni who have committed themselves to being in the service of humanity.
 
Reflection - Does your leadership role require you to help other students prepare for and process their service experiences? Are you interested in learning different modes of reflection you can utilize as an individual or with others? The Field Guide to Service is a tool designed and developed to provide individuals and groups with an understanding of the steps to prepare, engage and reflect in doing service well. In this workshop you will learn how to facilitate Field Guide to Service activities with both individuals or groups.

Since you indicated that you will be working with minors this year, you are required to attend a new mandatory training.

Working with Minors Training - This year will bring with it some exciting changes that will enhance the work we do and create new opportunities for deeper engagement with the youth we serve.  One such change is a new University-wide Working with Minors Policy that will go into effect on September 3, 2019.  Designed for those who volunteer with projects that work with minors, this mandatory training session will include an overview of the new university policy, interactive activities, best practices for working with minors, a review of Pace Center emergency response protocols and more!

Networking Opportunity: Time with Alumni
 
Entering Community - How do we stand with others with grace, humility and respect? How do we best navigate entering into community with others? In this workshop participants will learn how to identify, value and learn from a community partner’s skills and expertise, and develop a lens of compassion to guide their work.
 
Trenton: Past and Present - Our Capital City is rich with history and culture.  It has a thriving Arts scene and rich heritage of everything from food to architecture.  It also has some of the regions biggest challenges in housing, food security and education.  Come learn from Mercer County Freeholder and the CEO of the Capital Area YMCA how Trenton’s history is in many ways our Nation’ history; how policies and prejudices have created situations that persist today; and how the strengths of the community are coming together to face these challenges.

Building Inclusive Environments: "An Introduction to the Disability Community" - This workshop is designed to help equip volunteers with the skills needed to work with those who have developmental disabilities.  Participants will also have time to ask questions to current student leaders working in this area. Best Buddies and Special Olympics Volunteers strongly encouraged to attend.

Networking Opportunity: Health and Healthcare

Civil Rights Commission - Do you want to know what civil rights action look like at the local level? Join members of the Princeton Civil Rights Commission for a discussion on civil rights in the wider Princeton community and ways you can be involved in the work.

Networking Opportunity: Hunger and Homelessness
 
Active Listening: Be Here Now - What does it mean to truly be present and listen to what others are trying to tell you? How can you ensure you are fully understanding what others share with you?  Presented by trained experts in active listening and crisis intervention from CONTACT of Mercer County, this workshop will explore the set of skills needed to be an active listener. 
 
Cultural Humility and Navigating Privilege - When we serve, we are most effective when we are able to bring our whole selves to our experiences. With that comes a responsibility to know ourselves and create space to acknowledge  the experiences of others. In this session, workshop participants will learn how to navigate privilege and power dynamics, become allies, and serve as good stewards.

Networking Opportunity: Time with Community Partners
 
Service Opportunity: Period Project - The need for menstrual hygiene products for individuals who don’t have easy reliable, affordable access to them is one of the best kept secrets in our community and others. The Princeton Period Project seeks to support people with limited resources in our community obtain the menstrual hygiene products they need every month. Join us as we gather to learn assemble “period packs” for those in our community who need them.
