Why a "Wellness Expo"?

Townsville is a resilient and hard-working community in a range of circumstances from weather events to economic up and downturns. This year's monsoon event has shown us we are good at coming together to rebuild in times of need. One area we need to pay attention to is the mental health of the people of Townsville.

People are our most important assets and like most cities across Australia, mental health continues to be a significant public health issue.

'For communities to flourish, individuals must also flourish which requires healthy minds and bodies.' Tropical Brain and Mind Foundation vision.

Who should apply to be part of Mentally Healthy City?

We are currently seeking applications from a wide range of organisations, service providers, community groups and local businesses to participate in this significant community event.

Sites for this event are FREE to all participants.... if you would like to make a contribution please consider becoming an event sponsor (further details can be found later in this application).

While we are seeking a number of mental and general health service providers, we want this day to provide a huge range of overall wellbeing tools for our residents to tap into.

We are also seeking community groups who, by having a presence onsite, may encourage key groups within our community to attend this day.

Mentally Healthy City : Wellness Expo will be an entire event site filled with information stalls, workshops, interactive spaces, outdoor activities, speakers marquees and other event experiences.

We are keen to ensure that the event is vibrant and covers overall wellness and wellbeing. As such we are inviting a very diverse range of event participants to be part of this event.

We are encouraging all participants to provide something interactive as part of their site. Preference will be given to applicants who can provide this sort of interactive experience to people attending this event.

*We understand that this type of interactive activity may not be appropriate for some of our health service providers. The presence of these health service providers is vital to the core messaging and overall success of this event and as such we do not specifically request the additional inclusion of interactive activities for these applicants.

Some exmaple of interactive activites;
   - Would you like to present a 30minute wellness/mindfulness workshop?
   - Do you run a sporting or outdoor activity group who could set up a 'come and try' zone?
   - Could you include puzzles, games or craft activites to encourage people to visit your site and stay a little longer?
   - Could you create a space where people could sit and enjoy their surroundings?
   - Do you have 'hints and tips' or small demonstrations you might be able to present from you site?

YOUR PARTICIPATION IN MENTALLY HEALTHY CITY

The Wheel of Wellbeing

We will be basing our selection of participants on the 'Wheel of Wellbing' . The Wheel of Wellbing (WoW) is a framework that has been developed to shape new ways to improve well-being. WoW is based on six universal aspects of well-being: body, mind, spirit, people, place, planet.

Please let us know which aspect of the Wheel of Wellbing is relevant to your site. Please select as many as applicable.

BODY: Be Active

Your body is the engine that powers your well-being. It’s designed to move. Physical activities like walking, waltzing or wii-ing can positively influence the way you think, feel and function. Practicing an activity you enjoy for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week, is a necessary ingredient for a long and happy life.

MIND: Keep Learning

Studies are showing that life-long learners are some of the healthiest, happiest people around. Our well-being can improve by taking up a new hobby, practicing the piano or even struggling with Scrabble.

SPIRIT: Give

Did you know that giving to others does amazing things like reducing your blood pressure and improving your sleep? Practicing random acts of kindness, volunteering time, or simply saying ‘thank-you’ all work wonders for your well-being.

PEOPLE: Connect

Close relationships with friends and family can add up to 7 years to our lives. That’s the same benefit as giving up smoking! So plan a party or get together for a gossip to connect more with the people around you.

PLACE: Take Notice

Noticing nature helps us press the pause button. It reduces the stress of our 21st-century ‘hurry-worry’ lives. Savouring our surroundings gives us, quite literally, more breathing space.

PLANET: Care

Keeping our blue planet in tip-top shape is the best recipe for world well-being. It can sometimes feel like a hopeless task, but small positive changes like getting on your bike and switching off your charger, can make a big difference.
Which aspect of the Wheel of Wellbeing will be applicable to you/ your site? Please select as many as applicable. *
